Jesus asks the Pharisees another simple question:
Who do you think the Christ is? Whose son is He?
Their answer:
The Son of David
Then Jesus uses scripture and asks them how does David in the Spirit call Him Lord?
No one could answer that question.
The Christ was David's Son and David's Lord.
They had questioned His authority in Matthew 21:23
After that they kept looking for ways to entangle Him in His talk.
Jesus was prepared and with every question, He brought back simple questions or answers, or parables, that silenced them with no other response.
They were not able to answer the questions that He asked.
